Creating a Practice Routine
Once you are playing at Levels 1-2 or above, you will be ready to begin a series of courses. Notice the default order of these courses. This is your practice priority!
Daily Progression > Repertoire > Piano Essentials > Piano Studies
Each of these course types will be explained shortly. First, let’s talk about practice for a moment. For best results at the piano, you will want to have frequent practice sessions throughout the day. These sessions should consist of the same activities. This is known as spaced repetition.
I recommend all of your sessions begin with the Daily Progression, and then proceed into Repertoire (which should consist of multiple pieces), and finally an assignment from Piano Essentials. If you are a Studio Premium member, you may wish to work on something from Piano Studies before you wrap up.
Although you may be starting with your daily progression exercises, your repertoire should receive the bulk of your attention in any given session.
Your whole routine should fit into a range of 30-60 minutes, depending on skill level. You will then want to repeat this routine at least several times per week. You will experience the fastest progression if you can repeat the routine around 2-3 times per day.
Remember, frequency > duration.
Using the Courses
The courses aren't really part of your practice routine (outside from the Piano Essentials material). The courses exist to introduce you to new things, show you what’s next, and provide reference material. They will also give you an idea of where you are in the curriculum.
You shouldn’t be needing to look at the courses every time you practice. You should look when you need to reference how to do something or want to be introduced to the next thing. Try to memorize what your routine is (or write it down and leave it at the piano) and only reference the courses as needed.
Next, we will talk more about the course types.
